For a long time, my favourite glosses were the Glossy Stains ($ 37) from Yves Saint Laurent. But they recently got dethroned by something 'cheaper', which is the MAC Versicolour Stain ($ 25).
So what's the big deal? There are tons of great cheap glosses on the world, they say! And maybe there is an even cheaper gloss on the market that is like my two favourites, but I haven't discovered it yet. But the thing is, these don't feel like a gloss, they're long wearing and they leave a stain. As someone who is not crazy about glosses, this is the perfect marriage of a gloss and a longwearing lipstick.
They feel gel-like and a bit gelatinous, they stay glossy for a couple of hours and it doesn't get smeared all over your face.
The MAC Versicolour stains come in two varieties: the stains and the cream stains.
The Versicolour Cream Stains are more pigmented and overall have a bigger impact. They stay very glossy, there are neutrals, brights and very dark colours.
From this line, I have the colour Serial Stain, which is a cool toned red. On the pictures below, you can see how it looks freshly applied and how it looks after 3 hours and a ight lunch. I also want to mention that it was applied just with the doe-foot applicator and I only used the gloss. No lip liner, no primer, just the gloss.
Let me express why I love this gloss: Bright red, lovely pigmentation that stays put. No gloss on chin after lunch, no gloss on teeth, precision application is possible with such a bright shade, no major bleeding... And it's also easy to re-apply!
I've always loved the idea of glossy bright red lips, but I was always scared of the mess it can cause. And I've tried tons of things to make a red glossy lip last: lip primer, lip pencil, liquid lipstick topped with red gloss... whatever! But it always ended up a mess. If you encounter the same issues, try this gloss and be amazed (spoken with TV commercial voice). But serious, these are great and I want the dark purple one!
But if you're not fond of bright, opaque colours, MAC also has the normal Versicolour Stains. You can also get nudes, pinks reds and purples, but they apply more sheer. They also leave a stain, but logically it's a bit of a softer effect. I have the colour Always & Forever, which is a soft pinky salmon shade and even though it's a sheer nude, the stain still is noticeable.
This one isn't as long lasting as the red one, but because it's such a sheer colour, it isn't as noticeable when it wear off. The gloss is also less intense.
When I compare the two MAC Versicolour Stain variants, I recommend the Cream ones the most, because for those pigmented colours, you really want that special formula. As for the sheerer formula, I don't think that there is as much difference with a normal gloss that it would justify the higher price tag. But you still have to apply it less often than a normal gloss.
One final practical thing to note is that the packaging for the MAC Versicolour Cream stains is shiny black and for the Versicolour Stains it's a matt black.
So that's that! I'm planning on expanding my collection and if you want to try them yourself, definitely visit one of the MAC counters in your country.
